Really Interesting Things!
What's next for the BBC?
The Benefice Book Club (yes, that's what that stands for!) had a great time discussing our last book, 'A Generous Orthodoxy'. Next on the list is 'The Shack' by William P. Young, which is a story that explores the nature and character of God. We'll be meeting again at 7pm at the Vicarage in Markington on Monday 11th January. All are very welcome to come along.

Diocesan Events
Saturday 9th January, 7.30pm, at St Cuthbert's, Pateley Bridge: 'Bethlehem'
This Christmas season, Nidd Chorale is reviving Rutland Boughton's Christmas opera Bethlehem in a concert version, with some parts spoken not sung. The work was first performed in Street, Somerset in December 1915, so this year marks its hundredth anniversary and, as far as we know, ours are the only performances occurring to mark this landmark. Rutland Boughton (1878-1960) was a popular composer of beautifully tuneful music. He was admired by the greatest musicians of his day – Elgar, Bliss, and Vaughan Williams among them. Bethlehem is a setting of the nativity play from the Coventry Mystery cycle and is full of good tunes and wonderfully different settings of well-known carols. It is an ideal way to celebrate Christmas and Epiphany. Do come. Venue: St Cuthbert's Church, Pateley Bridge on Saturday 9th January at 7.30 pm, followed by refreshments. Tickets £8 from Pateley Pharmacy, or ring 01423 711278

Wednesday 20th January, 6.00pm, at Ripon Cathedral: The Big Lunch Briefing
The Big Lunch Briefing will be held at Ripon Cathedral, 6pm - 7.30pm All who would like to be involved are welcome.. Dean John Dobson writes: Can bunting, cupcakes and lashings of ginger beer change the world? Well the answer to that might be yes. Ripon Cathedral has formed a rather special relationship with the organisers of The Big Lunch – an idea dreamed up by the Eden Project that invites people across the UK to sit and have lunch with their neighbours on one day. Since 2009 over 20 million people have taken part, and in June 2015 over 7 million people from across the UK took to their streets, gardens and community spaces for the 7th annual Big Lunch. 2016 will be a very special year in that it will be HM The Queen's 90th Birthday and even more reason for people to come together and raise a glass with friends and neighbours. The day will be June 12th 2016. This is a special invitation to come and find out how to get involved and what this could mean for your parishioners. We will have Peter Stewart MVO, a Director at The Eden Project in Cornwall and leader of The Big Lunch with us to tell us all about it. The Date: 20th January 2016 Evening starts with choral evensong at 6pm (optional), followed by Peter Stewart speaking about The Big Lunch and the partnership with Ripon Cathedral from 6.30-7.30pm. With all good wishes, Dean John Dobson
