Really Interesting Things

Our Confirmation Service, on the 14th of June went really well, and Bishop James preached an inspiring sermon. If you weren't there (or indeed were, and just want to hear it again), it is now available on the Benefice web siteubstory.blogspot.co.uk – just have a look on the right hand side for the 'Sermons' section.

Really Interesting Things

We had a really good and wideranging discussion at our Theological Reading Group this week, exploring, amongst other things, ideas of mission, contemporary engagement with the gospel, and the person of Jesus. It's brilliant to have a place for thinking, and talking about our faith – where the questions are as exciting and important as the answers (if there are any!). The next meeting has now been put in the diary for Monday 7th September, 7pm, at Markington Vicarage. For that meeting we will be reading and thinking about, 'The Shadow of the Galilean' by Gerd Theissen, which is fictional work, but based heavily in historical sources, exploring the kind of world Jesus walked around in, and the impact he had on it and those around him. A great read even if you can't make it to join the discussion on the 7th September.
The South Stainley Hog Roast was a fantastic event - well-catered, well-attended, and well, sunny! So a massive thank you to all who sponsored, prepared, and attended. If you didn't attend, you really missed a treat. Not only did it raise a phenomenal £1,100, it really demonstrated that there is a lot of local support for exciting one-off events in the village of South Stainley even if they're put on by the church. Which bodes well for the Festival Services kicking off in July, with our Songs of Praise Festival (almost certainly including strawberries, and a refreshing summer beverage), at 4pm on Sunday 5th July.
The Bluebell walk, you might be interested to know, at the last count raised just over £600 for our Burkina Faso project – so a good solid start on our way to our target. The next Burkina Faso event is the 'Songs of Summer' concert, in Ripley Church, Saturday 4th July, 7pm, a blend of sacred and secular music. Tickets £10.

under 12s £3 (first drink included). Raffle and games. For tickets please contact 01423 772929 or 01423 771788.  Lots of people have been asking, "Where is it?" - the safest thing is to head to South Stainley and follow the signs (I'm assured there will be plenty).

Morning Prayer is said at 8.30am on Mondays in Bishop Thornton, and on Tuesdays in Burnt Yates

Toddler Time (stories, crafts, and (occasionally) songs for little people – and a grown up of their choice) happens every Monday at 1.30pm at Markington Church, during term time.

There is a mid-week traditional language communion service at 10.00am on Wednesdays at Ripley.

Two things to note quickly about our worship

  1. How we deal with Fifth Sundays in the Benefice has now changed. Rather than having a single United Benefice Service on a fifth Sunday, each PCC now takes responsibility for deciding what is on offer (or not!) locally. This is an emotive change, and for some insight into why it's been made, please have a read here.

  2. The service pattern at Ripley has a new addition – on the last Sunday of the month there will now be Tea at 4pm, followed by Evensong at 4.30pm. Presence at one does not necessitate presence at the other!
